Dental Crown Under Restorative Dentistry
A dental crown is a custom-shaped tooth restoration placed over a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its strength, appearance, and function. The process involves filing down the existing tooth, taking an impression, fitting a temporary crown, and finally cementing a permanent crown. Crowns are used to protect teeth after root canals, repair cracks, or improve the appearance of severely decayed teeth.
What a Dental Crown Is
A tooth-shaped cap: A dental crown is a permanent cap that fits over a damaged or weak tooth, encasing the entire visible portion.
Material: Crowns can be made from various durable materials, including porcelain, ceramic, or metal alloys.
Purpose: They restore the natural shape, appearance, and strength of a compromised tooth.

When a Crown Is Needed
Broken or cracked teeth: Crowns protect teeth that have been severely cracked or fractured by an injury or by biting down on something hard.
After a root canal: Crowns safeguard a tooth that has had a root canal treatment, which can weaken it.
Large cavities: They are used to restore teeth with large cavities when they are not strong enough to hold a traditional filling.
To improve appearance: A crown can be used to cover a discolored or misshapen tooth to enhance the look of a smile.
The Procedure
Preparation: Your dentist administers a local anesthetic to numb the area.
Tooth Reshaping: The existing tooth is shaped by filing down its outer surface to create space for the crown.
Impression: An impression is taken of the prepared tooth and nearby teeth to guide the creation of a custom-fit permanent crown.
Temporary Crown: A temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth to protect it while the permanent crown is being made.
Permanent Crown Placement: In a second visit, the temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is fitted and cemented securely into place.
