What to Know About Gum Surgery
Gum surgery is a treatment option aimed at addressing gum disease and improving oral health. It can help manage serious conditions and may also be used for cosmetic purposes, such as adjusting a “gummy” smile. At Wellington Dental Clinic, our experienced team of oral surgeons are committed to providing care in a supportive and comfortable environment, using techniques designed to minimize discomfort.
What Gum Surgery Involves
Gum surgery can involve different procedures, depending on individual needs. A common type is flap surgery, which involves cleaning plaque and tartar from beneath the gums to support gum health.
Another type is gum grafting, where tissue is typically taken from the roof of the mouth or another source to repair and restore gum tissue.

Types of Gum Surgery
Gingivectomy
Removal of diseased or excess gum tissue to reduce pockets where bacteria collect. Often used to treat gum disease or improve appearance.
Gingivoplasty
Reshaping of the gums to create a more natural and even gumline, often done for cosmetic reasons after a gingivectomy.
Flap Surgery
The gums are gently lifted back so the dentist can clean the roots of the teeth and remove infection. The gums are then sutured back into place for healing.
Crown Lengthening
Gum tissue (and sometimes bone) is reshaped to expose more of the tooth’s surface. This may be needed for restorative work or cosmetic purposes (“gummy smile” correction).
Soft Tissue Grafts
Tissue is taken from another area or a donor source and placed over areas where the gums have receded, covering exposed roots and protecting teeth.
Bone Grafting
Bone or synthetic material is added around teeth to help regrow bone destroyed by gum disease. Usually done along with flap surgery.

Considering Gum Surgery?
Not everyone requires gum surgery. In the early stages of periodontitis, treatment may involve deep cleanings and additional maintenance. Early detection of gum disease is important for managing its progression. Contact us to schedule an appointment and discuss the treatment options best suited to your needs, including whether advanced treatments like gum surgery might be necessary.
